Guide to Bridal Apparel

Find the right bridal apparel to make a special wedding day

By Ben Hahn, Freelance Writer

Bridal apparel is one of the most important components to the perfect wedding. A wedding day is one of the most celebrated days of a woman's life, with all of her family and friends there to honor her, so it's important that the big day has the appropriate bridal apparel and gifts.

Bridal business is a huge industry, so you can be sure that bridal manufacturers provide any products your business is looking to sell. Whether you're an independent dressmaker looking for wedding gowns or a bridal business specializing in personalized bride wear, you can find the products you need from online distributors. Find any of the apparel and accessories you need, including:
  1. Buy bridal apparel, including dresses and gowns, from wedding gown distributors.
  2. Find bridal gifts, wedding party apparel, and accessories like bridal party sweatsuits.
  3. Find distributors of bridal fabrics for making your own apparel and personalized bridal wear.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Find bridal wear from online distributors

If you're looking for a large selection of the newest fashions and styles, websites of wedding gown distributors will show the wide variety of options available. Look for bridal manufacturers and wedding dress distributors that have online catalogs so you can compare the looks of different gowns and find prices that fit your budget.

I recommend: Wholesale Wedding Gowns sells bridal wear at discount prices. Browse their large online selection of bridal dresses available in many different styles. BridePower.com is a bridal wholesaler offering wedding apparel at a fraction of retail price.

Buy accessories from an online bridal business

Along with wedding gowns and veils, gifts and accessories comprise a large portion of the bridal apparel industry. If you're selling bridal gifts, accessories like bridal party sweatsuits, or bridal party wear, find a supplier offering apparel for every aspect of a wedding.

I recommend: Bride's Treasures sells a wide variety of discount wedding and bridal accessories. Find bridal apparel like garters and jewelry, or stock up on invitations and guest books. Bridal Express Online6 offers bridal gloves, shoes, and lingerie, as well as other accessories. They also sell bridal gowns at huge discounts.

Purchase bridal fabric for your own dresses

If you're making and selling your own wedding gowns, find fabric from online bridal manufacturers. Create your own personalized bridal wear with the best fabric you can find.

I recommend: Check out BridalFabric.com for a variety of choices. Use their online catalog to see pictures of each product and compare prices, colors and sizes available. HouseFabric.com is an online bridal fabric outlet selling a wide range of fabrics for use in making bridal apparel.

Tips & Tactics

Helpful advice for making the most of this Guide

  • •  When buying bridal apparel and accessories from a distributor, look for deals on bulk purchases. If you don't see a markdown advertised on a distributor's website, contact them directly to see if you can get a deal on a bulk transaction.

Guide to Bridal Apparel News and Trends

Bridal apparel news and trends will help you sell what your customers want

By Denise Ryan

As a bridal apparel retailer, you know that brides-to-be demand stylish formalwear and accessories to set the tone for their special day. By keeping current with the industry’s fashion trends, company news, seasonal color forecasts and bridal wholesalers, you’ll be able to anticipate your customers’ needs and fill these needs at a reasonable price.

Gather details from a variety of sources to help your bridal business stay ahead of the competition. When looking for resources that offer pertinent, reliable and up-to-the-minute articles on everything from wedding gown distributors to wedding party apparel, try to:

1. Walk the floor of wedding-related trade shows, expos and fashion shows to see cutting-edge styles and talk to bridal manufacturers, retailers and brides face-to-face.

2. Study articles online and in print to stay up to date with trends in bridal apparel and gifts and personalized wedding wear.

3. Participate in organizations designed for wedding retailers to get business tips through workshops, network with other retailers and discover new wedding dress distributors and wholesalers.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Visit wedding conventions to uncover new bridal apparel merchandising ideas and wholesale sources

Trade shows and expos aimed at wedding apparel retailers or couples planning their special day can provide valuable information on hot trends, emerging designers and innovative ways to display and advertise the goods. You can also talk to company representatives and find new sources for specialty fashions, like personalized bridal wear, embroidered bridal wear and even bridal party sweatsuits that clients can wear while getting their hair and makeup done.

I recommend: Check out one of The Great Bridal Expo Group events to see cutting-edge bridal apparel, bridesmaids' dresses, tuxedos and accessories. Keep an eye out for new wedding dress distributors, colors and merchandising ideas as you walk the floor. Visit the National Bridal Market produced by Merchandise Mart Properties. This is a retailers-only event where you can discover apparel styles and sources and attend educational seminars to boost your business.

Read articles, blogs and forums for trends and bridal manufacturer news that can help your business

Hear about company developments and bridal fashion forecasts through news stories provided by industry observers, retailers and manufacturers. In addition to seeing new styles in gowns, fabrics and colors, helpful stories will give you the heads up on everything from new vendors to personalized bride wear from those in the know.

I recommend: Get information from the WeddingChannel.com like industry news, celebrity wedding trends and distributors of bridal veil wedding apparel, wedding gowns and accessories. The site also has a “Dream Gowns” section on its message board that will give you insight into your clientele’s needs. Check out the wedding apparel articles through the Fashion Industry News website, which provides company happenings and wedding-related data that will affect bridal apparel trends. For more news on on bridal apparel and gifts, check The Knot or Brides.com.

Join groups to build your bridal apparel business through seminars and networking opportunities

Share ideas and information with other retailers to help grow your business. Most groups provide industry newsletters and offer opportunities to participate in educational workshops, social functions and online forums where you can discuss bridal apparel news and trends with other retailers.

I recommend: The Association for Wedding Professionals International offers benefits ranging from a newsletter with industry information, advertising opportunities, educational seminars and mixers where you can network with other retailers. The National Wedding Retailers Association provides its members with a message board to share the latest news and trends, wedding trade show schedule, a buying forum and a place to promote your bridal apparel business.

Tips & Tactics

Helpful advice for making the most of this Guide

  • •  When attending bridal apparel and wedding-related trade shows and conventions, also use the opportunity to discuss current trends, colors and merchandising ideas with brides-to-be. Find out what new styles are hits, which classics you can keep in your inventory and what draws them to one retailer's shop over another.

Guide to Bridal Apparel Design Education and Training

Start your bridal business off right with bridal apparel training

By Autumn Rivers, Lead Copywriter, Webflo Studios

Whether you own a bridal apparel store or plan to make bridal apparel and gifts as a freelancer, training is a good idea. Even seasoned bridal manufacturers could use a refresher course when it comes to staying up on the latest trends. The most successful wedding gown distributors never stop learning, so whether you are just getting started or consider yourself a pro, you could use some bridal apparel design education and training.

Whether you specialize in personalized bridal wear, unique wedding party apparel or a little of everything, some training is always useful. You can learn to improve your bridal business through a variety of ways, so choose the one that best suits you:
  1. Attend bridal apparel seminars and fashion shows.
  2. Take classes to learn more about your craft.
  3. Read about the latest tips in industry books and magazines.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Become one of the top bridal wholesalers by attending seminars and shows

Nearly every state in the U.S. has at least one bridal seminar or fashion show make its way through the area, and your attendance can provide an important training opportunity. Whether you are a novice and just getting started in the bridal industry or are quite experienced and want to find out how to make more advanced dresses, such as embroidered bridal wear, you can't help but learn at least one important thing from each seminar you attend. Even simply sitting back and taking in a fashion show can help you discover successful design trends.

I recommend: Check out the most popular trends at New York's Bridal Fashion Week. The Wedding Channel Couture Show also provides opportunities for those in the wedding industry to get a look at the latest gown fashions.

Become a better bridal manufacturer by going back to school

If you are a beginner in this business, or perhaps feel rusty at making trendy gowns, consider attending a fashion school. Even a weekend course can help you brush up on your dressmaking skills. Be sure to choose a course based on the amount of time you can devote to this endeavor, along with the specific skills you need to improve.

I recommend: Several schools offer a designer dressmaking degree, which is a start to making your own personalized bride wear. World Wide Learn lists some of those schools. Start by learning the basics of sewing dresses and finish off with wedding gown sewing instructions at the Couture Sewing School.

Research books and magazines that involve the bridal business

If you want to find out the latest trends in bridal wear, hit the books. Industry publications are a good way to familiarize yourself with different styles while picking up helpful design tips.

I recommend: Denverfabrics.com has a list of bridal design books that are helpful for beginners. The Baltimore Wedding Guide provides a list of books that may be useful to new and advanced dressmakers alike.

Tips & Tactics

Helpful advice for making the most of this Guide

  • •  Check out community resources in your city for inexpensive sewing classes. Once you learn the basics, you can move on to learning more about bridal apparel specifically.

Guide to Bridal Apparel Key Terms

Get outfitted with some common bridal apparel terms

By Darcy Chadwick

When you're running a bridal apparel business, it's important to know some common bridal terms to assist your customers. If a bridal party wants a specific type of material for the wedding dress, you must know what it is, as well as if it's available. Additionally, there are numerous aspects to a bridal gown, and you must familiarize yourself with the accessories that accompany gowns. Brush up on some common bridal terms to benefit your sales and to make your customers happy.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Crinolines

Crinolines resembles a stiff petticoat that poofs out the wedding gown. Many of today's crinolines have several layers of stiff netting. There is a hoop within the crinolines made out of plastic or nylon, which helps keep the proper shape.

I recommend: Visit Fashion-Era.com to learn more about crinolines.

Train

Although a train is not a necessity on a wedding dress, some brides prefer to have them as they create a statement when they walk down the aisle. The train trails behind the dress. Most brides can detach or bustle the train after the ceremony.

I recommend: At WeddingSolutions.com, you can see examples of the numerous types of trains.

Garter

The wedding garter comes in numerous colors, patterns and materials. A bride can place the garter on her upper thigh for the groom to remove, if the wedding couple opts to do so. The groom can then toss the garter to the crowd to determine the next bachelor to get married.

I recommend: At WedAlert, you can learn about the history behind the garter.

Ascot

The groom or his groomsmen wear an ascot or an ascot tie in order to match the tuxedos to the bride's colors. An ascot contains a narrow neckband with wide pointed wings, traditionally made out of silk. The formal tie usually folds over and fastens with a stickpin or tie tack.

I recommend: Learn what type of weddings an ascot works well for by visiting Amanda's Bridal and Tuxedo.

Bridal veil

The bridal veil covers part of the head or face. A bride may opt to cover her face with the veil, which the groom then raises during the ceremony. A bride can also position a veil on her head with the assistance of a headpiece or tiara. Some brides also choose to remove the veil for the reception.

I recommend: Check out TheWeddingWizards.com to see examples of the types of bridal veils available.

Chiffon

Chiffon is a common textile used to make wedding dresses. Manufactures can make chiffon from silk, cotton, nylon, polyester or rayon. The fabric tends to be sheer.

I recommend: Visit TextileGlossary.com to learn more about chiffon.
