Guide to Receivers

Receivers are the core of your customers' home entertainment centers

By Emily Lugg

At one time receivers were used to make the most of a home stereo. These days receivers are used as the central units to many home entertainment centers. Instead of just being connected to the AM/FM radio or turntable (now CD player), receivers now connect through the television as well.

There are many different features and inputs and outputs that receivers can possess. It would be helpful to your customers to carry a wide variety to accommodate their entertainment needs. When deciding on your receivers list, keep in mind the following:

1. Offer multiple receivers that have different audio capabilities.

2. Think about receivers that are equipped for various video functions.

3. Consider stocking the latest in receiver technology: digital systems.

The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Consider stocking your shelves with receivers that have different audio operations

Receivers are equipped with multiple audio channels to produce output. Try offering receivers that have different numbers of channels. It is also important to consider offering receivers that are outfitted to support high definition (HD).

I recommend: Onkyo is a major manufacturer of receivers, including several multichannel options. Denon is another top name in receivers, offering products with such features as Ethernet ports, HD radio capabilities, dedicated iPod ports and more.

Think about the multiple features receivers can have

Some customers may just be looking for a standard stereo receiver. Others may be looking to find receivers that have a few more bells and whistles. Some of the new receivers have the option to connect both music and video outputs including, in some cases, a satellite radio.

I recommend: JVC offers a multichannel receiver that would suit customers looking for a basic receiver. Panasonic has several audio systems that function as a complete home theater unit, helping you show customers that you're a receivers provider that offers the ultimate in home entertainment.

Offer digital receivers to customers looking for the latest technology

As a receivers provider, you want to provide customers with the most up-to-date receivers information -- and products -- to keep them coming back for more. These days, digital receivers and digital media, in general, seem to be the top of the pops.

I recommend: Sherwood offers a Dolby digital receiver that also has video capabilities. Harman Kardon takes digital receivers to a whole new level with its digital media center. It claims to bridge the gap between DVDs, CDs, cell phones and cameras.

Tips & Tactics

Helpful advice for making the most of this Guide

  • •  Receivers are pieces of audio/video equipment that are often purchased with other audio items. Providing deals to your customers when they buy more then one major item may encourage them to buy all of their equipment at your store rather then shopping around piece by piece.
