Guide to Sportfishing Bait, Lures and Flies Basics

Choose the most appropriate fishing tackle to make your fishing trip a success

By Casey Holley

Bringing the fishing tackle and equipment that attracts the fish in the area in which you are fishing gives you a decent chance of catching fish. This is especially important if you are organizing a company fishing trip because you want everyone to have fun.

Tailoring your fishing tackle is vital, especially if your space is limited. Consider the following sportfishing bait, lures and flies basics when investing in your fishing tackle inventory:

1. Compare different types of freshwater fishing tackle to attract the fish you want to catch.

2. Determine what fishing tackle you need for a saltwater fishing expedition.

3. Stay up to date with what is working for other fishermen by reading blogs.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Find freshwater fishing baits, lures and flies

Different types of freshwater fish are attracted by different types of sportfishing bait, lures and flies. Learning as much information as you can about the types of fishing tackle that attract different types of fish, including bass, can help you to have a more successful fishing expedition.

I recommend: LureNet offers numerous articles about choosing the most appropriate fishing tackle. You can also find tips on how to find good fishing spots and tailor your fishing bait to the area and species of fish. Discover Boating has articles about fly fishing and sport fishing. You can find detailed articles on how to choose fishing flies and how to attract bass without bait.

Learn about saltwater fishing tackle

There are different types of fishing tackle made for saltwater fish. For example, sharks are attracted to chum, while puffers are attracted to live fish. Knowing the most appropriate fishing tackle for the species you are fishing for gives you a better chance of a successful fishing trip.

I recommend: First Light Net offers numerous articles to help you decide the type of sportfishing lures and sportfishing bait for your fishing trip. FinTalk.com offers a forum and articles to help you choose the most appropriate saltwater fishing lure for your fishing expedition.

Read tips about fishing tackle from other fishermen

Blogs are a good way to keep find out about new fishing lures, tackle and bait. Many fishermen post tips on blogs when they find new methods for using tackle or new brands of tackle that seem to attract the fish. Blogs are also a good way to find new fishing spots and learn about fishing tournaments.

I recommend: You can find fishing blogs submitted by fishing enthusiasts, including professional fishermen, at eFishBox.com. These blogs cover topics such as how to choose fishing tackle and how to choose species specific fishing lures. MyOutdoorTV.com offers numerous articles that feature tips for choosing sportfishing flies, bait and tackle based on the species and location of your fishing trip.

Guide to Sportfishing Bait, Lures and Flies

Become the go-to business for sportfishing bait, lures and flies

By Margaret Haerens

Sportfishing bait, lures and flies are fishing tackle used with a fishing rod and reel. They attract fish by mimicking the movement of prey. When the fish bites the prey, it snags itself on one of the several attached hooks. Caught!

These products vary widely in style and function. What fishermen need depends on a variety of factors: Are they fishing in freshwater or saltwater? What type of fish are they aiming to catch? What kind of fishing lure, bait or fly will work best in particular fishing conditions?

It is essential you do the following things to make your business successful:

  1. Offer a colorful, innovative collection of fishing bait, lures and flies.
  2. Consult with customers to make sure they get the best product for their particular needs.
  3. Update your inventory with the newest and choicest products to generate excitement and long-term patronage from serious fishermen.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Offer a variety of durable, lifelike fishing bait

When many people think of bait, they are thinking of live, home-raised fishing bait, like earthworms or minnows. There is also a big market for nonliving bait. This plastic bait contains balancers that make the bait jerk and move and closely resemble live bait in appearance and motion.

I recommend: Megabass USA is one of the leading manufacturers of freshwater and saltwater fishing bait. LUCKY CRAFT also offers a wide selection of bait arranged into collections by fish species.

Bright fishing lures will entice serious and beginner fishermen

There are many types of fishing lures: surface, trolling and spoon lures, plugs, bass worms, spinnerbait and jigs. Be sure to offer a wide selection.

I recommend: Rapala VMC, one of the top sportfishing lure producers in the world, offers a variety of freshwater and saltwater lures. Another leading manufacturer of sportfishing lures, JACKALL, provides anglers a wide selection of high-performing products.

High-quality fishing flies will add to any customer's fishing tackle

Sportfishing flies are designed and made to resemble flying insects that fish love to eat. Often used by fly fishermen, there are thousands of colorful styles meant to attract particular fish.

I recommend: Percy's Flies sells 1000s of hand-tied flies in different sizes and colors. The website contains a search engine for anglers looking for specific designs. Blue Fly Cafe also offers a variety of hand-tied flies for discerning anglers, including dry flies, nymphs, terrestrials, bass and pike flies, streamers and saltwater flies.

Tips & Tactics

Helpful advice for making the most of this Guide

  • •  Offer a selection of fishing tackle boxes for beginning fishermen. They will need a place to store their colorful, new fishing lures, bait and flies.
  • •  Customer service is vital to serious fishermen. Know your brands, new styles and new technology. You must be ready to meet your customers' particular needs by recommending the right fishing tackle.

Guide to Sportfishing Bait, Lures and Flies Education and Training

Business owners and customers benefit from sportfishing bait, lures and flies education and training

By Heidi Crossman

Presenting your business as a knowledgeable source for sportfishing bait, lures and flies will guarantee that customers come to you with their questions, their "catch" stories and all their business. Fishing is a sport of tales. Sharing a tale and incorporating details about fishing baits or sportfishing lures you are selling will breed enthusiasm about your product.

In a sport where most knowledge is passed down from father to sons and tips are secretly shared among buddies, the truth behind the tale is that no one is going to use a product they don't know anything about. The more educated your business presents itself, the most trust your customers will place on the products you offer. This means you should:

1. Keep current with the latest product offerings.

2. Gather as much information as you can on your inventory.

3. Get hands-on experience with the products.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Become familiar with fishing bait, fishing lure, fishing flies online

Viewing information on the Internet is a great way to glean knowledge from other and more experienced anglers. Internet information is updated often. A variety of specific information can be found quickly.

I recommend: At Wonder How To, you can view videos about fishing and different lures and baits. Expert Village is another website offering educational videos on the subject. Websites like EquipmentUsedForFishing.com are a wonderful source for someone just getting into fishing who does not even know the basics yet.

Discover specialized products that aid in improving knowledge and experience with lures and flies

Having products on hand that make learning about fishing easier will be a draw to customers with little or no experience. Products like these can also be given as gifts from those who are unable to fill the fishing mentoring roll themselves. These products can range from actual equipment to training books and videos.

I recommend: EasyRelease Fishing offers training on various aspects of fishing. At Alltackle.com you can view available fishing videos and magazines that provide tips and other training.

Find out about schools and local training classes on fishing tackle

Fishing related schools are available for those who wish to hone their skills from the best of instructors. For focused education closer to home, local wildlife agencies and hunting associations usually offer classes for beginners and more experienced outdoorsmen and women. Many of these classes range from a few hours to several days. You can attend these classes, promote them or even offer them to your customers.

I recommend: American Fly Fishing Schools lists schools all over the nation to choose from. Angler-School.com is a school that allows you to get the same training as from other fishing schools but it can be completed online.

Guide to Sportfishing Bait, Lures and Flies Key Terms

Cast aside the differences between bait, lures, flies, and other sportfishing terms

By Cathy Salustri

Bait, lures, and flies are a crucial component in sportfishing. To a novice angler these words may seem interchangeable or may not make any sense. Whether your company wants to work with sportfishing bait, lures and flies or set up a company fishing trip, learning the different terminology is just the start of an angler's education.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Bait, lures, and flies

The first step in understanding the terminology surrounding bait, lures and flies is understanding the difference between the three. Bait can mean live bait, such as squid, worms or shrimp. A lure is simply an artificial copy of live bait. Flies are either real insects or lures made to look like insects.

I recommend: The Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation describes bait and lures and also has links to related sportfishing terms to help explain how the different sportfishing key terms interrelate. The Arizona Game and Fish Department explains flies and fly-casting.

Jig and jigging

A jig is a type of lure weighted with lead. Jigging refers to working a jig in the water so as to attract fish.

I recommend: The Squidoo fishing glossary explains both jigs and jigging.

Spinning and fly casting

Casting, spinning, spincast and fly are four different ways of casting a fishing line and lure, bait or fly in the water.

I recommend: Cyber Web and Bumblebee Works explains spinning while Orvis explains fly casting.

Hooks

Anglers put bait on hooks, which have barbs on the end that hold the fish on the hook when it strikes the bait. Hooks come in all sizes and have several different parts, including the shank, barb, eye and bend.

I recommend: The Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation has a complete description of fish hooks, including a diagram explaining the different parts, a history of the fish hook, and the uses of different types of fish hooks.

Plugs

Wooden lures that look like bait are called plugs. Plugs come in two basic varieties: surface and subsurface.

I recommend: The Outdoor Network defines and explains the different types of plugs.

Buzzbait, jig-n-pig, flukes, sluggos, surface poppers, crankbaits, jigging spoons and spinner baits

Buzzbait, jig-n-pig, flukes, sluggos, surface poppers, crankbaits, jigging spoons and spinner baits are all different types of lures. Each of these have different purposes and work in different weather, bodies of water and depths of water.

I recommend: Woods & Waters Magazine describes each of these lures in depth. The magazine's website also offers tips for using each type of lure.
