Ascend Communications, Inc. develops, markets, distributes and services a wide range of digital wide area network (WAN) access products which support a large spectrum of end-user applications and configurations. The company produces three type of network access products, the Multiband products, the Pipeline products and the MAX products. The MAX products are used for WAN access, multimedia access and internet access facilities. The pipeline products are used for remote office access and internet access telecommunication. The multiband products are used for multimedia networks. The sales offices of the company are in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Belgium, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia. During the year 1998, the company acquired Stratus Computer, Inc. In January 1999, the company entered into an agreement for merger with Lucent Technologies Inc. Core systems accounted for 47% of 1998 revenues; access switching, 41%; enterprise access, 7% and other, 5%.
