Elastic Networks Inc. designs, develops and markets high-speed digital subscriber line (DSL) communications products. These products enable service providers to deliver easy to deploy and cost-effective broadband access solutions over the existing copper telephone wire infrastructure. The company designs its products based on its patented EtherLoop technology that combines the best attributes of DSL with those of Ethernet technology to deliver a next generation access solution. The company's products consist of Internet protocol DSL access multiplexers that connect DSL signals with the Internet and other networks, DSL modems and complementary software. These products are sold directly to domestic and international service providers for deployment in various environments, such as central offices to reach business and residential users or on any premises where multiple end users are located, including hotels, multi-tenant business complexes, apartment buildings, condominiums and university campuses. The customers of the company include CAIS Internet, Inc., Darwin Networks, Inc., OverNet Inc. and others. The company was originally formed in January 1997 as the Elastic Networks group of Nortel Networks Inc. and began doing business as a separate company in May 1999. The company became publicly held in September 2000. First generation digital subscriber line access multiplexers accounted for 92% of 1999 revenues and license revenue, 8%.
