Guide to Engine Turbines Education and Training

Train to build and maintain turbine engines

By Terri Deno

Engine turbines are system engines found in certain types of aircraft. The most common types of turbine engines are the gas turbine engine, a turbine jet engine and the steam turbine engine. Because each has a special design and function, those working on engine turbines should have training in more than one turbine system.

Training to work on engine turbines begins with aviation maintenance or design training, then continues with additional training for specific systems. Once you complete basic aviation training, you can explore specialties in turbine engine systems. You can find many options for engine turbines education and training by choosing programs like:

1. Standard training for gas turbine engines.

2. More complex jet turbine engine training.

3. Newer technologies, such as the solar turbine engine.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Learn to build and repair large and small gas turbine engines

Gas turbine engines are the standard for most small aircraft. This type of engine is the easiest to operate and maintain with an average amount of aviation training. Gas turbine engines found on aircraft range in size from unmanned models up to medium-sized commercial aircraft.

I recommend: Gas Turbine Training can teach you to work with up to eight different types of gas powered turbine engine models. Mil-Com Aerospace Group provides basic courses that teach how turbines engines work and how to perform common repairs.

Train to perform repairs on a turbine jet engine

If you want to work with larger aircraft, training in jet turbine engines is essential. Large commercial and military aircraft use jet turbine engines for their reliability and speed. Those that want to work with jet turbines can get training directly from military sources, or manufacturers of jet turbines.

I recommend: BVM Jets offers on-site training for those that buy and maintain aircraft that have jet turbine engines. Teledyne Continental Motors provides an aviation maintenance technician factory training course that teaches technicians how turbine jet engines are built, and also provides techniques for repair.

Get training to work with a steam air turbine engine

Steam turbine engines work in a similar way to gas turbine engines, except that they use the power of a steam engine to power up the turbines. This type of technology is often found in small commercial aircraft and unmanned aircraft.

I recommend: Woodward offers product training courses for its steam and combustion turbine engines for aircraft. The classes show technicians how to use controls for the engines and troubleshoot problems. Energy Solution Center offers a self-guided tutorial on the history and mechanics of steam turbine engines.

Guide to Engine Turbines

Find engine turbines online

By Ben Hahn, Freelance Writer

Turbine engines are used to provide energy for a number of applications, including powering aircraft, trains ships and electrical generators. The gas turbine engine was the original turbine engine, and still offers a number of advantages over other engine turbines, with a high power-to-weight ratio, high operating speeds, and low operating pressures. Other turbine engine variations are powered by steam, natural gas, solar power, diesel and other fuels.

Turbine engine manufacturers offer a variety of options to meet your needs, whether your business deals in repair and maintenance of turbine-powered vehicles or production of electrical generators. Find a wealth of options from online vendors:
  1. Find a turbine jet engine to power an aircraft.
  2. Purchase micro turbine engines.
  3. Save when you buy a surplus turbine engine.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Buy engine turbines for aircraft

Jet engines burn fuels to produce thrust from exhaust gases or from fans connected to the turbines. Gas turbines are the most widely used engine to power aircraft. If your business deals with aircraft mechanics, find suppliers of turbine engines online.

I recommend: Williams International is a leader in manufacturing small gas engine turbines for a variety of aircraft and offer award-winning product support. Register with AvSupport for access to an online market of aircraft equipment, including turbine engines. Buy, sell and research parts and equipment for all types of aircraft.

Find manufacturers of micro turbine engines

A mini turbine engine can be used in a variety of distributed power and combine heat and power applications. A small turbine engine can range in size from a handheld unit to commercial sized system. Micro turbine engines run on a variety of fuel types and are designed for high energy efficiency.

I recommend: Calnetix Power Solutions sells Elliot micro turbines, small engine turbines used for distributed generation, combined heat and power, biogas and offshore applications. Check out their website for product information. Capstone manufactures micro turbine engines ranging from 30 kilowatts up to 200 kilowatts. Their engine turbines operate stand alone or grid connect and run on a variety of fuels.

Buy surplus engine turbines online

Engine turbines can be expensive pieces of equipment. To find a great deal on engine turbine parts and equipment, look to a vendor that offers used or surplus goods. Surplus goods will cost a fraction of new products and offer the same functionality.

I recommend: Government Liquidation sells surplus and scrap assets from the United States Department of Defense. Find a wide range of listings of jet turbine engine products and parts. Sign up with ILS for full access to aircraft parts, including a variety of turbine engines from multiple resellers.

Guide to Engine Turbines Key Terms

Get moving with basic vocabulary for understanding engine turbines

By Lisa Maloney

Engine turbines make the world go 'round--literally. From steam turbines in electricity plants to turbofan engines in jet aircraft and microturbines powering environmental control units, these rotary engine components propel modern society forward. The turbine itself is a simple creation for which innovative applications are still being discovered.

In order to understand engine turbines, you need to understand types of turbines engines and components of turbine engines. Start with the following vocabulary to put engine turbines into context.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Turbine

A turbine is essentially a bladed rotary unit that spins and produces energy when gas, air or liquid is directed against the turbines.

I recommend: Energy Solutions Center gives a concise, complete explanation of a turbine's function in an engine.

APU

Auxiliary Power Units, or APUs, are small, turbine-driven units that are generally responsible for supporting functions of a vehicle--from heavy trucks to space orbiters--but not actually propelling it. Even though they're not propelling a vehicle, APUs round out the classification of turbine engine types.

I recommend: The National Aeronautics and Space Administration gives a detailed explanation of how APUs support the operator of their orbiter vehicles.

Microturbines

Microturbines are relatively small, stationary energy producing turbines. Even though they don't produce movement of the structure they're housed in, they are technically still a turbine engine.

I recommend: The Whole Building Design Guide explains microturbines and their advantages in great detail.

Cogeneration

Cogeneration, on-site power generation, combined heat and power or distributed generation all refer to the production of electricity with a heat byproduct that can then be applied to some useful purpose. Steam, combustion and microturbines all produce combined heat and power.

I recommend: Sankey explains the principle of cogeneration with a helpful diagram.

Turning gear

The turning gear is utilized when an engine turbine is still subject to energy-producing forces, such as steam, wind or water. The turning gear turns the turbine at a slow rate of speed to keep it from warping under the pressures it is subjected to.

I recommend: The Jamestown Board of Public Utilities explains the purpose of a turning gear in relation to the other parts of a steam turbine engine.

Nacelle

The nacelle or turbine housing contains the bulk of a turbine engine's components, including the axis for the turbine's rotation. In a turbofan engine, as on a jet aircraft, the nacelle may house the entire engine.

I recommend: The Better Planet explains the basic anatomy of engine turbines by using a wind turbine as an example

Guide to Engine Turbines Types and Styles

Know the different types of engine turbines available

By Terri Deno

A turbine jet engine is a powerful engine that is used in many types of airplanes and helicopters. A turbine engine can run on gasoline, steam, jet fuel or even batteries in mini models. Most of these engines require internal combustion to power a plane, but there are also models that do not use it. Turbine engines are reliable and have an excellent safety record.

There is a wide variety of engine turbines types and styles available for aircraft. The best type of turbine engine for the vehicle will depend on the weight and total output of power. The most common types of turbine engines include:

1. Gas turbine engines for helicopters and planes;

2. Steam turbine engines for more efficient power;

3. The small turbine engine for unmanned aircraft and radio controlled planes.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Choose a gas turbine engine for many types of aircraft

A gasoline powered jet turbine engine is one of the most common types of turbine engines for aircraft, other types of vehicles and even power plants. The gas turbine engine works by using a rotary engine to create a flow of gasoline. The power of the combustion of the gasoline powers the engine. Most aircraft use this type of engine because is has a good power-to-weight ratio and are built smaller than other types of engines.

I recommend: Nye Thermodynamics provides the output and heat rate specifications for gas turbines according the model and manufacturer. National Aeronautics and Space Administration provides computer generated diagrams and information on the construction and functions of gas turbine engines.

Choose a steam turbine engine for efficient power

A steam powered turbine engine is an efficient source of power when properly maintained. High efficiency steam engines need to have a steady pressure and heat level in order to maintain the greatest amount of power. Steam turbine engines are used in some types of aircraft as well as go karts, generators and power tools.

I recommend: Quasiturbine provides information on the different types of steam power turbine engines and how steam is converted into energy. The University of Rochester provides a history of the steam turbine engine and information on the evolution of steam technology.

Consider a mini turbine engine for small or light applications

Turbine engines come in a wide variety of sizes. The smallest turbine engines are known as mini or micro turbine engines. These engines are frequently used for model airplanes, small gliders and unmanned aircraft. Micro engines can run on gasoline or on batteries, but battery powered engines do not provide the same amount of flying time.

I recommend: R/C Airplane World provides information on how small gas turbine engines for radio controlled airplanes work. MIT's Technology Review provides information on the technological advances that could change the length of battery life in micro turbine engines.
