Guide to Airline Safety Education and Training

Airline safety education and training is necessary in light of FAA requirements

By Katherine Kay

Aviation safety education is an individualized process. Choices and options are many. There are online courses, webinars, workshops, seminars, brick and mortar and at-your-site training options. The student needs to look at the equation at a deeper level and ask questions, “What kind of training do I need? What are my goals and needs?”

Look for research schools and airline safety courses the way parents and high school students look for the right college or university to attend. There are plenty of con artists out there, on the web especially, offering less than sterling courses. Buyer beware. Consider the following when looking for air safety training:

1. Get trained in airline safety online.

2. Use brick and mortar schools and customized options for airline emergency training.

3. Attend a workshop or seminar for air safety education.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Take a rigorous online aviation safety training course

There are many fine online programs. Look for testimonials and professional looking websites. There are as many or more low standard programs and even scams online, as well. Find the great programs by researching, asking questions and scrutinizing.

I recommend: Air Safety Foundation offers free interactive online courses. Courses take about an hour, but you can go at your own pace. Baldwin mentors online safety programs that use Internet based safety and reporting tools that monitor flight safety. Insurance companies support Baldwin’s program. Contact them for webinar tours and schedules.

Use brick and mortar schools for airline safety training

Take an aviation safety course at an established aviation school or center that will hold up under scrutiny.

I recommend: NW Aviation Safety Education promotes aviation training in the Pacific Northwest by bringing aviation instructors, pilots, examiners, and education professionals together from across the tri-state area of Washington, Idaho and Montana to exchange their best practices in safety. U.S. Army Combat Readiness teaches the necessary skills to manage aviation safety programs at battalion and company levels. These courses train individuals to run aviation safety programs.

Find seminars, workshops and other opportunities for air safety classes

Seminars and workshops are a good way to learn aviation safety. Look around and you may be surprised at some of the other unique training programs available.

I recommend: International Society of Air Safety Investigators offers a training workshop that may help you and your business. Take aviation safety seminars with government FAA Safety. Scroll down this list and the find the course that is right for your company. National Aviation Safety Foundation out of Florida offers seminars, guest speakers and counseling in aviation safety.

Tips & Tactics

Helpful advice for making the most of this Guide

  • •  When it comes to online programs, formulate clear goals and needs before choosing air safety courses. Maybe you just need a rigorous program to get up to speed quick. Beware of training programs that promise more than they can deliver. Look at testimonials and teacher credentials and backgrounds to find good courses that meet your needs.
