Conrail Inc., formerly consolidated Railroad Corp., is a major freight rail company, providing freight transportation services within the northeast and midwest United States. It operates over a rail network of 11,000 route miles, with a fleet of 2,100 locomotive and 52,800 freight cars. The company serves a large industrial base and provides customers with access to a substantial market for durable and non durable goods and raw materials used in manufacturing and electric power generation. The company interchanges freight with other United States and Canadian railroads for transport to destinations within and outside Conrail's service region.
