Computer Preventive Maintenance

Proper cleaning, frequent virus scans can help ensure operation

Some key preventative maintenance steps to take:

1. Keep your operating systems up to date. This will make sure software runs smoothly on your systems.
2. Install and run anti-virus programs, and keep those up to date as well.
3. Run disk utilities regularly on your hard drives. This is one of the most basic and effective maintenance measures you can take.

 

Download patches or service packs

Microsoft and Apple provide free security updates to their operating systems — download and install the latest versions and fixes.
Try: Go to Windows Update for Microsoft Windows operating systems. In Mac OSX, go to the Apple menu and select "Software Update" to check for updates, to download and to install.

Remove spyware, adware and viruses

If you've opened e-mail tainted with viruses, spyware or adware, or clicked on some nefarious online links, you need to run a program to clean spyware, adware or viruses from your system.

Properly maintain your hard drive

For Apple disk issues, including "permissions" corrections (which help your Mac locate resources) use Disk Utility and/or fsck.

Clean up the dirt

You can't get online help with dust and dirt, so roll up your sleeves or task an employee.

If you don't have the skill, time or patience to maintain your own PCs, you can train an employee or hire an IT consultant.

• Built-in disk, registry and permission checkers do a decent job of keeping your computer tuned, but if you're a heavy user with lots of files and mission-critical applications, consider commercial add-on utilities to get the best breadth of coverage.
• If you want to use free online virus, spyware and adware checkers, plan on running two or three different solutions to make sure you get decent coverage.
