By Nikki Davis Photography equipment leasing is a sensible alternative over buying new camera equipment for new and experienced photographers alike. Leasing photo equipment allows the photographer to affordably test potential new equipment without permanently committing.
 

Why consider a photo equipment lease? Here's my situation, after five years with Fuji brand professional digital cameras, I'm considering a move to Canon. The camera that I want to purchase will run $3,000, though. How do I know if that camera is the right choice for me? What about the lenses? Each one runs hundreds of dollars. For those of you in the same position, a photography equipment lease will allow you try before you buy.

1. Look local first for camera equipment leasing. Check with your area camera store and ask if they have a photo equipment lease program or photographer equipment loans.
2. Check online for US photography leasing programs.
3. Make sure that you have a clear understanding of the lease terms.
4. Determine if photography equipment financing is available for the rental.

Make sure that you understand the terms of the camera equipment lease. Ask questions and make sure that you are well informed before you sign the terms of agreement.

Determine if you need insurance for photography leasing

Consider taking out separate insurance on the equipment if your homeowners, travel or business insurance doesn't cover it.
Try: Ask about a rental equipment floater policy when you speak to your local insurance representative, or see if your rental company offers insurance as part of their package. Lens Rentals offers their own insurance program to the renter.  Ask if your store does, too. 

• Make a "need" and a "want" list. Determine what items you absolutely need for your business, and figure out which items are on your wish list.
• Once you have figured what you need and what you want, determine how those items fall into your budget.
• Don't be afraid to try something new. By leasing camera equipment you might find the perfect camera or accessory that you have been missing out on all these years.
