Apps are sparing our sanity once again, even during tax season. D-day is upon us and it’s time to round up those loose receipts and file returns.

When April (or March for some of you) rolls around, you’ll be sitting on a year’s worth of receipts. Whether you store them by envelopes or have one of those bulky scanners, keeping paper receipts is a pain. The Shoeboxed app helps you clear the clutter by capturing receipt images and organizing them in one location. You also have the option to send all your paperwork to Shoeboxed experts who then scan all your paperwork, verify the data and catalogue everything for you.
This app is available for iPhone, iPad, and Android and at various price points depending on your needs. There’s also a free, bare-bones version offered.

The Neat App also helps you manage expenses. Turning your smartphone into a scanner, this technology captures your receipt images and extracts the important data using Intelligent Text Recognition. Your organized folders are easily shareable and can transform effortlessly into expense reports. An optional service, NeatVerify, gives you the choice to have specialists verify your scanned receipt images. The Neat Cloud offering starts at $4.99 and increases depending on the premiums options you choose to use.
This app is simply awesome. It guides you through the process of filing your tax forms, which you can simply photograph and upload immediately. Need to process employee W-2s and 1099s? Now there’s an app for that. You’ll also be assisted with finding tax deductions and figuring out what exactly the IRS is asking of you. If you’re looking for a hassle-free way to file your taxes, we’d suggest getting this app immediately. It’s free to download, but will cost $29.99 to file federal tax returns and $36.99 for state tax filing.
IRS2Go is the official app of the IRS. Available for both iPhone and Android, this app lets you check the status of your federal income tax refund and access free tax advice from experts. The app is free.

To keep afloat financially during tax season, sometimes it’s nice to get a quick and dirty estimate of your possible refund. The TaxCuster app features the same calculator featured on the Turbo Tax website, but in the palms of your hands. It doesn’t calculate the exact amount nor does it file documents. It’s just a useful way to prepare for the coming months.
With the FREE H&R Block app, you can “tap into over 50 years of tax experience” by uploading images of all necessary documents and sending them to an H&R tax specialist. You can schedule an appointment with a professional, track your refund status, and estimate your taxes- all from that new iPhone you’ll be writing off this year. If you’d rather take the independent route, you can upload images of your tax info, let the built-in technology scan for possible mistakes, and “e-file” your forms for $9.99.
