You need to make sure that the voltage is the correct one for your airplane and that the product has all the safety features and extras that you expect. With a little bit of preliminary research, you can choose a battery charger that will last for many years.

There are multiple types of aircraft battery chargers on the market. Some charge the battery by using a regular wall outlet, while others use outside sources like the sun to charge up your aircraft. You may see battery chargers in the following categories when you do your shopping:

Get the right voltage on your aviation battery charger

Airplane batteries generally come in 12 and 24 volts, and the one you choose depends on the model of your airplane. Smaller single-engine planes usually take 12 volts, while larger planes need more power. Refer to your owner's manual to make sure that you get the right airplane charger for your plane.

Consider buying an automatic charger for your aircraft batteries

If you run a busy shop, it's easy to get sidetracked and forget how long a battery has been on the charger. Furthermore, it may be difficult to find out exactly how depleted a battery is, which can lead to over-charging and possibly damage to the battery. Automatic chargers take the guess-work out by automatically shutting off when the battery is full.

Make sure that your aircraft power supply and charger are compatible with your aircraft

If your airplane or battery is still under warranty, the manufacturer may have very specific instructions on how and when you should charge the battery. Make sure to read the manual and talk with the battery charger vendor to find out what type of charger the company recommends for your aircraft.
