A Guide to Army Publications

Army publications are managed by the Army Publishing Directorate, a branch managed by the Administrative Assistant to the Secretary of the Army. The Army Publishing Directorate offers a number of different newspapers, manuals and types of publication for different branches of the military.

Army Publications Products

Army publications fall under a specific type of category, which are distinguished by the purposes they serve. The following are the different types of army publications available:

Administrative:
A large number of army publications fall under the administrative category, addressing a wide variety of topics. These topics range from general policies and procedures, army regulations, and memorandums. Some examples of administrative army publications include Joint Admin, Medical Admin and Civilian Personnel Publications.

E-Forms:
The Army Publishing Directorate is also responsible for providing an electronic database of e-forms, or electronic forms. These forms range from DA, DD, GPO and standard forms.

Technical and Equipment:
A number of publications are designed to providing technical knowledge and assistance with equipment. For example, the Army Publishing Directorate offers technical manuals and bulletins, related to providing logistics data and intelligence to the Army and other defense organizations.

Doctrine and Training:
One of the major responsibilities of the Army Publishing Directorate is to offer publications related to doctrine information and training. One of the largest categories available, doctrines and training publications cover a wide range of issues, such as Field Manuals, Technical Manuals and Soldier’s Manuals. In addition, there are a number of manuals related to conventional and unconventional warfare, and training soldiers in survival, intelligence acquisition, and recruiting.

Engineering:
The defense branch would be nothing without the engineering personnel, needed to supervise and oversee engineering and construction projects. In order to support engineers and other engineering professionals, the Army Publishing Directorate offers an Engineering Technical Manual, covering an endless amount of topics. These topics range from natural resources management, facilities engineering, and the maintenance of electrical and mechanical systems.

Medical:
The medical branch is a fairly critical component of any army and defense organization; therefore, the Army Publishing Directorate offers publications designed to support medical and other healthcare personnel in the army. Publications are offered in a number of subjects, such as general medicine, veterinary and dental practices. In addition, there are a variety of publications related to sanitary practices such as proper food storage and water treatment.
