By Katherine Kay Boating instruction is an individualized process. Choices and options for training and education run the gamut. There are online courses and certifications. There are also hands-on training and schools.

Sailors and boaters need to look at the equation at a deeper level and ask questions, "Do I need a rigorous training program to be the captain of my ship?” or, "Do I need a simpler boat safety course or certification to be the cook on a cruise ship or fishing boat?" There are a number of online training programs even in boating. Look for testimonials and professional looking websites. There are as many or more low standard programs and even scams online, as well. Find the great programs by researching, asking questions and scrutinizing.

Use official and established boat schools for your certifications and training

Go to an established school for your education or certification that will hold up under scrutiny. The US Coast Guard and state Fish and Game Commissions offer strong programs in boating instruction.
Try:  Coast Guard courses give instruction to boaters of all experience levels. Get their training for your boat license or safety certification. Arizona Game and Fish Boating Education offers National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) approved courses that include nautical and general information. Most insurance companies give discounts for completing their boating education and training course. Bridgeway Center offers boating safety courses that meet the Florida basic boat safety education. Arkansas Game and Fish Commission offers boat safety training.

Find sailing lessons for ocean or fresh water sailing

Ocean navigation, celestial navigation, offshore and onshore training programs are available. You can find out about many of these programs at the following websites.

• It's easy to find a boat school on the Internet. However, watch the fine print. Look at the testimonials. Check Better Business Bureaus. Compare prices. Make sure the school is not too expensive compared to other schools, and that it offers a good solid program.
