Cooling towers are used by power plants, oil refineries, and many other chemical plants to keep their machines from overheating. The job of cooling towers is to transfer waste heat out of the industrial plant and into the atmosphere. This is done through a few different methods that are specific to the needs of the building.
A wet cooling tower transfers heat through the process of evaporation. Generally, the fluid being circulated is the same fluid being evaporated. This means that there needs to be a constant replacement of the fluid to compensate for the amount lost during evaporation.
A dry cooling tower is similar to its wet counterpart except the circulation fluid never evaporates. The heat transfers from the fluid to a solid surface and from there, is displaced into ambient air.
A fluid cooler is a combination of the first two tower types. It circulates fluid around the heat source and then transfers it to a solid surrounding it. The next step is spraying water onto the surface of the solid. Evaporation of the water transfers the heat away. This is the most efficient tower type. It is as effective as a wet cooling tower, but no fluid is lost.
