The Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR) is a department of the Australian government, designed to promote and encourage sustainable growth in Australian industries. This department encompasses a wide variety of responsibilities, aimed towards creating an innovative system that drives science, research, and productivity. By promoting growth and innovation, the department plans to extend a number of benefits to the Australian population, such as social and economic advantages.
The department concerns itself with four different sectors: innovation, industry, science, and research. By improving and combining these various fields, the department seeks to support both the Australian people and their future.
Industry
One of the responsibilities of the department is to devise and create programs designed to promote the variety of industries in Australia. Some of the industries that the department supports include automotive, manufacturing, steel, and textiles companies. In addition, the department also provides programs for sectors related to the defense industry, such as marine, aerospace and biotechnology industries. The Industry Innovation Councils is an organization that is directly responsible for promoting innovation within industry, and improving productivity and sustainability.
Innovation
The main purpose of the innovation section of the department is to devise ways to increase the productivity and international competitiveness of Australia. Within the department, there are a number of councils and forums that were created to support the innovation system, such as the Coordination Committee on Innovation.
Science
The Australian government places importance on supporting the science and technological sectors, perceiving them as a cornerstone towards improving their social and economic future. Some of the responsibilities with regards to science include managing funds allocated to research infrastructure, developing partnerships with global scientific organizations, and advising the government on science-related issues. Another responsibility of the department is to provide publications on a variety of scientific issues. For example, the department has collaborated with international groups in the past, on issues such as oil-eating bacteria, heart tissue banks and therapeutic contact lenses.
Research
The above sectors are nothing without the appropriate research needed to support them. One of the main sectors that the department supports is higher education institutions. The department also supports research training programs, with the goals of collaborating between researchers, industry and public officials. In addition, the department also advises the government on a number of different policy issues.
