Learn more about glass windows before buying them for your business
By Andrea Townsley When it comes time to buy windows for your business, you'll be overwhelmed with the possibilities. With the growing popularity of energy-efficient products, there are even more types of windows for you to consider than there were just a few years ago. Whether you're building a new office or replacing windows in your existing building, knowing some glass windows key terms will help when you start shopping. Make sure to get several estimates before you buy and consider both short-term and long-term costs.

Sash

The sash of a window is the part that opens; sashes typically go up and down or swing outward. Some of the newer windows feature sashes that tilt inward for easy cleaning.

Single-hung and double-hung

The vast majority of older windows consist of single panes of glass, which are known as single-hung windows. Newer, more energy-efficient windows are often made with two panes of glass; these are known as double-hung windows.

Low-e or UV coat

Since UV rays can pass through glass windows, newer windows are being covered with a low-e or UV coatings that help to block these rays from coming into the structure.

Argon gas

Denser than air, this elemental gas is often used to fill double-paned windows. Evidence has shown that this gas can prevent heat from passing through the window. If the seal on the windows breaks, however, argon gas can leak out slowly and the energy-efficient property will be reduced. The gas is not toxic to humans or animals.

Transom

Transoms are windows that usually do not open and are located above doors or other windows. Popular shapes include rectangles and arches.

Grids

A grid is used purely for aesthetics and gives a window a segmented look. The most popular grid type gives the appearance that the window is divided into squares or rectangles. Grids can go in between two panes of glass or they may be affixed to the interior of the window. These are not to be confused with multi-pane windows, which actually have multiple individual panes.
