Finding a Handyman

When you own a business, having a handyman on call is always a good idea. You never know when something may break down, and having to stop what you're doing to arrange for an air conditioning repair, for example, costs you time and money. Finding a reliable handyman may take a little bit of searching, but once you find someone to do the job properly, you can focus on making money.

As you interview handymen in your area, there are a few pieces of information you should ask for. Many will offer this up willingly, making the interview process that much easier, but don't be afraid to ask anyone who doesn't offer. You'll need to get at least:

1. A history of each handyman's work

2. Handyman credentials, including things like HVAC certifications

3. Referrals from previous customers

Find handyman services by using a handyman directory or a handyman list

If your options seem unmanageable, a handyman directory may help you whittle the list down to a more manageable level. You begin by filling out your specific needs and requirements along with your address; you'll get a call from a few choice handymen who have experience in that particular field. You have access to references and work history before speaking with anyone, so you know that you're getting only qualified workers.

Work with a handyman provider who's licensed and insured

Choosing a handyman who is licensed and insured only makes sense, and it can save you from having to pay for costly repairs down the road if your handyman turns out to not be quite such a handy man after all. Licensed providers have usually been in business longer as well, which can give you some peace of mind that you're working with a professional company.

Get several quotes on your job before settling on a handyman

As with most contract jobs, it's important to get a few price quotes before committing to a particular handyman provider. You'll want to call both corporate and local companies to see how their prices differ. Local companies may be able to work with you to offer a lower price if your budget demands it.
  • Only work with a company that has individual handyman information readily available. Always ask for information on the person doing the job, and ask for an interview if you're unsure of the provider.
