ISO 9000
Tips & Advice to help you make your decision on ISO 9000
If you want to ensure that your customers are satisfied and happy with your business products or services, you may want to consider implementing the ISO 9000 family of standards. These standards represent an international consensus on good management practices and guidelines for consistently meeting customers' expectations.
Developed in 1987 to help consumers and governments see if businesses conform to basic levels of quality, this standard was first developed from the British standard BS5750. Since then it has been updated in order to be less bureaucratic. Instead of the ISO granting certification to organizations and businesses, certification is granted through national accreditation bodies. Actually, in order to gain certification, businesses need to go through an external audit by the certification body and an internal audit by staff trained for the process.
Achieving certification can be costly and time-consuming for businesses; however, there are several advantages to attaining ISO certification. Once a business is certified, it has greater credibility in the marketplace. The business will also be able to enjoy a more efficient and effective operation. Following the standards also leads increased contentment among employees, including improved motivation and morale. And, of course, customer satisfaction and retention are markedly increased.

Often they will have you follow these same basic activities as a first step.
The basic activities are:
Get a good reference book which is written around application of the ISO standard to small and medium businesses.
Try:
The American Society for Quality, www.asq.org and on-line book stores all have several rather short easy to read books which address the topic. My personal favorite is “ISO 9001:2000 for Small and Medium Sized Businesses” by Herbert C. Monnich, Jr.
