The Los Angeles County is a county in the state of California. It is one of the most largely populated counties in the United States, with about 500 different political districts. Therefore, the County Government must provide a wide variety of services and programs, all to serve the constituents. If you are a resident, or are looking to move to the Los Angeles County, it is important to understand the services and functions of the county government.

Services of the Los Angeles County, CA Government

The county government is comprised of 37 departments, all addressing a different, particular function. The following are few of the services that the government provides for its residents:

Coroner:
Members of the Los Angeles County Coroner Department are responsible for performing autopsies on deceased individuals.

Fire Department:
The fire department protects residents from fires, as well as provides medical services in times of emergencies.

Health Services:
The Department of Health Services manages several hospitals and clinics throughout the county, and also administers to the public health system.  Some of the services that the department provides include patient care, physician training and healthcare research.

Parks and Recreation
The Los Angeles County possesses a number of beautiful parks and playgrounds, as well as one of the largest golf courses in the United States. The Parks and Recreation department is responsible for maintain parks, gardens and trails throughout the county, as well as create community programs and events.

Public Defender:
In a court case, a individual may be unable to hire a lawyer, whether from legal or financial difficulties. In this situation, the county is responsible for providing them with a public defender, to represent them in their court cases. Public Works:
The Public Works Department administers the waterworks that runs throughout the Los Angeles County. Members of the Public Works Department are concerned with environmental issues and conduct clean earth, conservation and recycling projects. They are also responsible for maintaining the roads and aiding construction projects in the county.

Sheriff’s Department:
The sheriff’s department is responsible for providing law enforcement and crime prevention services. They provide their services for facilities that are owned by the LA County, as well as districts that lack their own police department. In addition, the department also administers the county jails, and provides bailiff services for the Superior Court.
