The NASDAQ Stock Exchange is the second largest stock exchange in the world, after the New York Stock Exchange. The NASDAQ stock exchange is an electronic stock exchange holding almost 3,000 listings at January 2011. NASDAQ Equity Indices include NASDAQ-100, NASDAQ Biotechnology Index, NASDAQ Composite and NASDAQ Bank.
The NASDAQ-100 Index is an index of the largest non-financial corporations listed on NASDAQ. The companies listed on the NASDAQ-100 are weighted according to their market capitalization and companies incorporated outside of the United States are included in the Index. The NASDAQ-100 Index is re-ranked annually which ensures that the index is an accurate reflection of the one hundred largest companies within the Index.
The NASDAQ Biotechnology Index lists NASDAQ-registered corporations separated into either Biotechnology or Pharmaceutical sectors, as classified by the Industry Classification Benchmarks.
The NASDAQ Composite Index is an index listing the common stocks and securities of the entire NASDAQ Index and contains over 3,000 listings. Since NASDAQ lists both U.S. and non-U.S. stocks, this Index does not consist solely of American corporations.
The NASDAQ Bank Index gives an indication of the performance of banks, savings institutions and companies performing banking-related activities.
