A Guide to Orange County, CA Government

California’s Orange County is one of the most affluent and conservative voting districts in the country.  It’s no accident that Richard Nixon is their most famous native son.  His Presidential library is located in his home town of Yorba Linda.  It’s been a Republican stronghold for most of the last century; the last Democrat who won the popular vote was FDR.  Let’s consider the government of Orange County in more detail.

The OC is populous in the extreme, despite its relatively small size.  Over three million people call this coastal community home, making it the third largest county in California, behind San Diego and Los Angeles.  Tourism is a major industry for the country, with its beautiful beaches and world-class attractions Disneyland and Knott’s Berry Farm.

The resulting affluence characterizes much of county life.  Golf is the major sport (Tiger Woods is a native), suburban developments are tightly controlled, and government can be abruptly limited.  In the midst of a budget crisis brought about by reckless investments in the mid ‘90s, county residents voted down a measure to avoid bankruptcy by raising taxes.  As a result, the OC became the largest county in the U.S. to go bankrupt.

Despite the fact that much of surrounding California tends towards progressive politics and liberal proclivities, Orange County remains arch-conservative on both fiscal and social issues.  Some theorists have argued that its origins as a settlement by religious Midwestern Americans contributes to this cultural character.  Others point to its resettlement by Far East refugees – especially from Vietnam – hostile to Communism and sympathetic to fiery Republican opposition.

Among registered voters, over forty percent are Republicans, slightly over thirty percent are Democrats, and the rest are unaffiliated.  Even popular incumbent Democrats often lose in the district, with Senator Dianne Feinstein winning a large portion but still losing to Dick Mountjoy – and Orange County being the only coastal Californian community that voted that way.

Many well-known figures in the Republican Party come from the county.  Besides President Nixon, Senators John Seymour and Thomas Kuchel are both native to Anaheim.  Former Congressman Christopher Cox was a White House counsel to President Reagan and a former chairman of the SEC.  1972 Presidential candidate and nominee of the ultra-conservative American Independent Party John Schmitz also called Orange County home.
