A Guide to San Diego County Government

In the south, the county begins at the Mexican border, and there’s a constant exchange of manpower and resources.  Many formerly Mexican families have settled in San Diego, and it’s the largest ethnic group outside of the white majority.  As you might expect, much of the Mexican population is concentrated near the border, and the concentration of largely English-speaking whites is higher in the northern suburbs.  Very generally, this tends to correspond with voting blocks, as Latino voters tend to support Democratic candidates and whites Republican.

This is borne out by recent election results, with the city of San Diego supporting Democratic presidential candidates from Clinton through Obama, but the county at large traditionally remaining a Republican stronghold thanks to an overwhelming majority of conservative voters in the northern and eastern suburbs.  However, in 2008, President Obama became the first Democratic candidate to win the county since the Second World War.

The US Senators for California are Democrats Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein.  Congressional districts for San Diego County include the 50th, 52nd, 53rd, and parts of the 49th and 51st, which are represented by three Republicans and two Democrats.  In the State Assembly, the eight relevant districts are represented by five Republicans and three Democrats.  The State Senate’s four relevant districts are represented by two Republicans and two Democrats.

The large military presence is a fixture of San Diego County public life, with 16 major naval and military installations figuring within its borders.  These include Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton and Naval Base San Diego, which is the principal homeport of the American Pacific Fleet.  The US Navy is in fact the largest employer in the county, making the government a very prevalent feature of the county.

Also heavily represented is the environmental community, with prominent wildlife preservation groups such as the Surfrider Foundation and the Sierra Club having important chapters in the area.  The long tradition of beach life and surfing culture has spawned an active political commitment for nature-lovers, and they make their voices heard in the halls of government over such issues as beachfront preservation, ocean clean-up, and wildlife reserves.

It’s a vibrant and diverse citizenry that animates public life in San Diego County, and the government of the region reflects that.
