Audio Visual Wall Mounts Key Terms

Don't get hung up by confusing wall mount terminology

By Thomas Langford
When you are installing audio visual equipment such as televisions, projectors, and speakers, the audio visual wall mounts could be seen as an after thought. However, AV wall mounts are really a critical piece of equipment that can enhance (or detract from) your audience's enjoyment of the presentation. So before you purchase audio visual wall mounts, you should understand the pros and cons of various types of mounts, such as full-motion, tilting, low-profile, ceiling, in-wall, and motorized mounts. This guide will help you find the right mount for your particular situation.

Full-motion mounts

If you want your audio visual wall mount to provide perfect television viewing from anywhere in the room, then you need a full-motion wall mount. Full-motion mounts allow you to swivel, tilt, extend and retract the TV so the screen can be seen directly from multiple viewing locations.
Try: B & H Foto & Electronics has a picture of a full-motion mount. Click the features and specification tabs for more information.

Tilting mounts

Tilting mounts give you the ability to adjust the television set up and down. This allows for enhanced viewing from a bed, couch or floor. Tilting mounts are also useful if you need to eliminate reflections and glare from windows or lighting.
Try: Mount Center has a great explanation of the benefits of tilting mounts.

Low-profile mounts

If you need to mount audio visual equipment in a tight space, then you should consider low-profile mounts. These mounts attach almost flush with the wall. However, low-profile mounts provide a fixed attachment, so once they are installed, the height and angle of your equipment will not be adjustable.

Ceiling mounts

Ceiling mounts are great if you can't or don't want to attach your audio visual equipment to the wall. Ceiling mounts typically tilt and swivel in all directions. Some ceiling mounts even come with a mechanism that allows you adjust the height of the equipment. Ceiling mounts are a great way to save space.

In-wall mounts

In-wall mounts are installed inside the wall, between the studs. They consist of a box that is placed in the wall. This box contains a full-motion mount, so the angle of your equipment can be adjusted. In-wall mounts are used for aesthetic reasons when you want to hide your mounting hardware or when you want to have a television sit flush with the wall.
Try: Milestone AV Technologies is a good resource for more information about in-wall mounts. The website also has a picture of one of the mounts.

Motorized mounts

Motorized mounts are ideal for large facilities where manually adjusting the viewing angle of a television is not possible or desired. The mount is completely adjustable by remote control, allowing you to quickly and easily eliminate any glare or reflections.
Try: Top Gear Electronics has a great video on its website that shows exactly how motorized audio visual mounts work.
