Concrete block retaining walls are a good solution for areas that need to have a stable structure for preventing erosion and water. Many retaining walls are made from concrete blocks. Mortar is used, however, when the retaining wall is surrounded by water on at least one side. Retaining walls are also used in areas where soil erosion is not a problem. The function of these retaining walls is to level off steep slopes that line roads, driveways or garden paths. This type of retaining wall is used for aesthetics more than function, but the retaining wall still helps to prevent a certain amount of soil erosion from happening.

Retaining walls can also be used for holding back water from flooding an area of land or from surrounding an important structure. These retaining walls are also known as bulkheads.
