Before ordering carbonless forms, take some time to review key terms associated with the printing and ordering process. Learning the specifics of the carbonless technology and printing process can save you time in the long run.

Pre-made or custom

Pre-made forms are forms the distributor has already printed. They are usually basic invoices, inventory or bill of sale forms that can be used by any company. Custom forms are designed specifically to meet your needs. A printing company will set up a form to your specifications, include your company logo and any other information you want. With custom forms, it's important to make sure you review a proof of the form before it goes to print.
Try: PrintIt4Less sells both custom and pre-made forms. They explain each type and give good examples of both.

Proof

A proof is a copy of an image, or item like a carbonless form, used to show the client before the printer prints the items. The client must review the proof carefully to make sure he approves of the item.
Try: Charlotte's Web Studios explains the printing proof process. The website includes a checklist of things to look for when proofing a printing piece.

Micro-encapsulated dye

Micro-encapsulated dye is the dye coated on the back side of each carbonless sheet. The dye works like a carbon paper would between the sheets and allows for the writing to be transferred to each sheet in the pack.

Four color process

The four-color process is one that uses the primary colors printed one on top the other to produce a range of many colors used for printing artwork and other full color images. Many companies offer four-color processing on carbonless forms.

Try: Anchorside explains how sequential numbering works. They printing company also offers helpful information about many other printing options.

Carbonless rolls

A carbonless roll, also called carbonless register paper, is available in long rolls to use as credit card register receipts for retailers and restaurants. The paper is two-part with a carbonless layer on the top allowing for the customer to sign and return the top and have a copy of the signed receipt in the bottom part.
