Gas Detectors Key Terms

Figure out the right gas detector by learning some key terms

By Meredith Fagioli
Gas detectors, or gas sniffers, can be a lifesaver. Whether they are located in a home or in a place of business, having something that can detect a gas leak or the presence of gas in the air can give occupants precious time to get out of the building or home. Gas detectors come in many models. Some detect one type of gas and some can detect multi gases. If you are confused on what type would benefit you the most, read a couple key terms and hopefully the knowledge you gain will help you make the right choice.

Single gas detector

A single gas detector is made to alert people to the presence of one type of gas. This gas can be carbon monoxide, oxygen or hydrogen sulfide.
Try: At TRS-Environmental, you can see an image of what a single gas detector looks like and read specifications on it.

Multi-gas detector

A multi-gas detector is designed to detect more than one type of gas in the air. In some cases, the detector can be wired to shut down equipment once gas is detected.
Try: If you visit the website of Pyroban, you can read about their multi-gas detector and see a picture of it.

Fixed gas detector

A fixed gas detector is installed onto machinery to monitor gas leaks. You might see a fixed gas detector installed on a pipeline or in a water treatment facility.
Try: At MSA, you can view their extensive line of fixed gas detectors and learn a bit more about them.

Portable gas detector

A portable gas detector is a small gas detector that can be carried around from area to area. Portable gas detectors can have a single or multi-gas detection ability.
Try: At RKI Instruments, you can view their line of single gas portable gas detectors.

Carbon monoxide detector

A carbon monoxide detector is a type of gas detector that is specialized. It will only detect carbon monoxide in the air. Because carbon monoxide can not be smelled or seen and has deadly effects, it is called "the silent killer."
Try: At Solar-Aid, you can read an article that will help you select the correct carbon monoxide detector.

Natural gas detector

A natural gas detector will detect natural gas leaks and other gases such as gasoline, ammonia or propane. They are typically hand-held and require batteries to power them.
Try: At Lab Safety Supply, you can view their natural gas detectors and specifications for each model.
