Hazardous materials management involves the ability to identify hazardous materials, the risks associated with that particular material, and the knowledge of how to remediate or remove those risks to prevent negative effects on humans or the environment.

Hazardous materials management also involves handling materials properly during transport, ensuring the proper labeling of hazardous materials and that truck transporting the materials is displaying correct placards and most importantly overseeing that individuals adhere to hazardous materials regulations.

49 CFR Training

Individuals such as managers and shippers who get hazardous materials ready for highway transport must attend 49 CFR training. Training topics include classifying mixtures and solutions and classification techniques.

DOT Hazardous Materials Training

The Department of Transportation requires mandatory training every three years for those who handle hazardous materials ranging from those who label containers to those individuals who transport the hazardous materials.

Hazardous Materials Safety Training

Hazardous materials safety training is important for all employees to ensure that employees take quick and appropriate actions should an incident occur. Types of hazardous materials safety training include topics on asbestos, aerosols, corrosives, chemical hazards and compressed gases.

Hazardous Materials Air Shipper Certification

Individuals who ship hazardous materials by air must obtain Hazardous Materials Air Shipper Certification, which includes instruction on 49 CFR training as well as International Air Transport Association rules, including classification and identification of hazardous materials, labeling and documentation.

Transportation of Agricultural Products

Agricultural products such as fertilizers, pesticides, gasoline and propane must adhere to hazardous materials transportation regulations. Transporters of such products must receive education on classifying and packaging hazardous materials, completing shipping papers, the use of placarding on the vehicle and providing emergency response personnel information should an incident occur. Agricultural operations may be exempt from some hazardous materials regulations.
