Indium

Use indium metal to manufacture electronics and other products

By Leah Kuriluk
Indium is a metal similar to zinc, that's used in manufacturing electronics and other goods. Indium is bright white in color, and is one of the softer metals. Indium alloys have very low melting points, so they are easily manipulated. Indium is also slightly radioactive, though it is not believed to be hazardous.

Because indium is malleable and easy to work with, it's used in a wide variety of products. Indium producers use it in liquid crystal displays and other electronics. Other uses for indium material include dental amalgam, solder and vitamin supplements. Indium is even used for medical diagnostic imaging purposes. Before using indium in one of its many forms, consider the following:

1. Pure indium metal does not pose risks to workers who handle it. However, some indium compounds are very toxic and should be handled with care.

2. Circuits created with indium are stronger, and last longer. Indium can be used as an alternative to lead in circuit boards.

3. Indium is a relatively rare element with many potential uses. However, some speculate that the manufacturing world will run out of indium in the next 30 years, which limits indium's long-term use.

Purchase forms of indium for your application's needs

If you want to try out a new application for indium or need large quantities of it, try a wholesale chemical retailer. Many chemical and electronic manufacturing suppliers stock indium in various forms.
Try: Buy different forms of indium from Belmont Metals, or get an indium quote from Goodfellow.

Buy indium alloys for manufacturing purposes

Indium alloys are used in a wide variety of manufacturing services, including lighting, batteries, ceramics and more. Most companies that sell pure forms of indium also sell alloys, but only some offer cutting and tooling services. Often, you can order parts made in indium alloys. In these cases the company will work with you to create the perfect part for your product.
Try: Check out MCP Group's wide assortment of indium and indium chemicals. Or, make your indium purchase from Vacuum Engineering & Materials.

Use manufacturing parts made of indium

Many companies will create custom parts made of indium or indium alloys for you. These parts include things like circuit boards, indium wire and other indium materials. You can sometimes purchase indium in different forms including chunks, foils, pellets, powder, rods, shots, slugs, starter sources, tablets & wires.
Try: ABC Metals offers laser cutting and fabrication services for a wide variety of metals, or purchase spheres made of indium from the Scientific Alloys Corporation.

  • Indium is ideal for making products which must be manufactured at low temperatures. An alloy consisting of indium and gallium is liquid at room temperature, which allows for easy shaping and manipulation.
