Measurement Key Terms

Learn some simple key terms to help your measurement knowledge rise

By Meredith Fagioli
If you are just starting out in the engineering, architecture, science or transportation fields, an important aspect of those fields is measurement. Accurate measurements are important to have the end product, such as a road, come out right. One of the first things you should do is familiarize yourself with some measurement key terms that are used in certain fields. Having a good sense of what tools can measure what will take you a long way.

Pressure gauge

A pressure gauge is a type of device that measures the pressure of gas or liquids. Pressure gauges are normally made out of either brass, stainless steel or aluminum.
Try: You can read an in depth article on pressure gauges at Omega Engineering. They also have a section that outlines the different types of pressure gauges made.

Caliper

When you hear the word caliper used regarding measurements, the person is talking about the tool used to measure the distance between two symmetrically opposing sides.
Try: Head over to Wisc-Online for a presentation on how to read a caliper correctly.

Micrometer

In the world of mechanical engineering, when a precise measurement is needed, micrometers are used. These devices are capable of measuring extremely small distances.
Try: Techtarget.com explains what a micrometer is.

Graduated cylinder

A graduated cylinder is used to measure liquids and comes in sizes ranging from small to large.
Try: Visit Indigo Instruments to learn more about graduated cylinders and to see visual images of them.

Barometer

In the world of weather, a barometer is used to measure the atmospheric pressure. Barometers are typically filled with mercury, which reacts to the pressure. The higher the mercury, the higher the atmospheric pressure.

Measuring wheel

Measuring wheels are tools that can measure long distances in a short amount of time. The person using the measuring wheel would stand behind it and push it the distance that needs to be measured.
