Medical Scrubs Key Terms
Learn the ABCs of medical scrubs
Whether you're a nurse looking for a new scrubs option, a medical facility trying to find the best scrubs to supply an entire workforce or a retailer looking wanting to stock a wide variety for the medical community, a little research can go a long way in your search for the perfect scrubs. Learn the key terms—including designs and styles of scrubs—to find out which can benefit you, your employees or customers. Medical scrubs are made for men and women in different styles, and they definitely don't all have to be plain green and boring.
Tie-back
A tie-back scrub is simply a scrub shirt that can easily be tied to tighten the waist or stomach area. The ties are usually in the back, which is why it's called tie "back." Tie backs come in many different sizes and shapes and are usually made for females.
Try: View information on the tie-back scrub at All Heart. It sells tie-back scrubs and includes a good photo explanation of the style.
Tapered-leg
The tapered-leg scrub pant may be more flattering to the male or female figure than most ordinary scrubs. While most are made with a straight leg, the tapered-leg pant actually forms to the leg more, making the wearer look slimmer.
Try: Read the definition of the tapered-leg scrub at National Scrubs, and view a photo and description of the scrub pants offered.
Boot-cut
The boot-cut scrub is a simple scrub pant with extra room at the bottom for boots or shoes. Instead of the straight-down pant leg, the boot-cut scrub pant flares at the bottom, leaving more room for shoes.
Try: View the description and photo of the boot-cut scrub pant at The Uniform Connection.
Tunic
The tunic is a scrub shirt that can be opened in the front and closed using buttons or a zipper. Tunics are also used as overcoats, or jackets, to wear as a second layer scrub to add warmth or even protection from possible contaminates associated with the medical industry.
Try: View the description of the tunic and compare options at the Uniform Corner.
Bioshield
A bioshield scrub is made out of a special antibacterial material that resists contamination. Scrubs made with bioshield can stop spills from soaking through. Some can even easily be wiped off with no indication that the spill ever occurred.
Try: The Medical Scrubs Mall explains an antibacterial scrub with bioshield.
Scrub hats
Compare the pony, pixie and poppy scrub hats. There used to be one basic scrub hat, but times have changed and so have scrub hat designs. The pixie hat is made for women or men with short to shoulder-length hair. It is designed to fit snuggly around a head with less hair. The pony scrub hat is designed for longer hair. The long hair can actually be put in a pony tail that is covered as part of the scrub hat. The poppy hat is designed primarily for women who like the old bouffant-style hat, roomy in back for long hair.
Try: Read the pony, pixie and poppy scrub hat descriptions at Blue Sky Scrubs. The retailer sells scrub hats in several designs and includes descriptive information about each.
