Learn online diploma key terms to make sure you get a legitimate degree
When you don't have the time to get a traditional degree, the thought of an online degree can seem like a lifesaver. Many people are turning to distance learning programs to complete their education. However, before signing up for a school, it's very important to make sure that the school is accredited. Some schools are just diploma mills, which are not legitimate. The Department of Education can help you learn which schools are accredited. Start by learning these key terms.
Accredited
Only look for accredited schools when seeking an online diploma. This means that the schools has been examined by an independent body and has been found to have a rigorous academic program and that the school is sound.

Online high school diploma
Those that did not receive a high school diploma may want to consider getting one online. This is different than a GED. It's an actual diploma through an accredited online high school. Traditional age students can also work towards a high school diploma online as well.

Trade school or vocational program
A trade school, also called a vocational or career school, prepares students for a specific career rather than giving a broad education. Popular trade school programs include auto mechanics and nursing. Some trade schools offer distance learning programs as well.

Life experience degrees
Those that never went to college may be attracted by the idea of a life experience degree. This is a diploma that recognizes you for the life experiences that you have gained. Be wary. Many schools that offer life experience degrees are not legitimate and the ones that are make it very difficult to obtain a degree.

Not all online schools are accredited. Those that are not are called diploma mills or degree mills. These schools will give you a diploma, but it is not legitimate.
