Plastic Cases Key Terms

Learn plastic cases key terms to make the right purchase

By Shannon Tani
Because of their durability, plastic cases are a smart choice for storing your fragile goods. When choosing plastic cases, you should know that there are many different styles to choose from. For example, you can choose a blow molded, injection molded or roto molded plastic case. You may also want to consider foam inserts for added protection. Before you go shopping for plastic cases, take the time to learn some of the key terms listed below.

Blow molded plastic cases

Blow molding is a method that manufacturers use to make plastic products. It creates a hollow plastic container that is lightweight, but very durable. A typical example is a soda bottle, but the technique is also used for plastic cases.

Pelican case

Pelican is a brand name for plastic cases. They sell products to the U.S. military, so you can expect them to be very strong. They also sell custom cases to consumers, ranging in size from a micro plastic case to hold a memory chip to large cases of all dimensions.
Try: Visit the Pelican site to learn more about their products.

Injection molded plastic cases

To create an injection molded plastic case, you'd need a mold in the shape of the case. Plastic is then injected into the mold, then quickly cooled, leaving a solid plastic case.
Try: See an injection molded plastic case at Bauer Cases.

Roto molded plastic cases

Roto molding, or rotational molding, is another way to manufacture plastic cases. This style creates a large, strong case, which could be suitable for shipping large items, such as a computer.
Try: Learn more about roto molding and see an example at Royal Case Company.

Waterproof plastic cases

Waterproof plastic cases can hold your wallet while you go swimming or store your goods in an area where there's a chance they may get wet. Waterproof plastic cases typically have a rubber seal that helps keep water out.

Foam insert

Foam inserts help to keep the goods inside your plastic case free from damage. Most companies can customize the design so that you get an exact fit, though you can also purchase the foam separately and create the design you need.
