Killer Publicity for Your Business on a Showstring Budget

By Connie Werner Reichert, President, Write Side Up Copywriting & Publicity
How would you like to be featured in articles in newspapers and magazines that reflect all about your business? How would you feel about being a guest on a television or radio show? It can all happen on a very low budget with exciting results and boosting your revenue.

Successful Publicity
1)     Make your company sound larger than life
2)     Make your audience want to be a client or customer
3)     Use your current publicity for even more attention from the media.

Here are the best ways to publicize your business without spending a fortune:
You need a “hook” or reason for media coverage.  Are you celebrating an anniversary  for the opening of your company? Are you growing and increasing your bottom line?  How are you different from the competition? These are all ideas you can use to write a simple press release.

   Create a media kit
Include a bio on your company. Prepare a fact sheet that captures all of the “who,
what, where, why, when and how” of your company. Include contact information       such as your email, web page, blog, address and phone and fax numbers. Include  a press release and other articles that have been published about your business if you have one. Include one page of testimonials from satisfied clients or customers. Place all of this information in a presentation packet (a simple folder will do) and add your business card and headshot if you have one.

    Appear larger than life
The media needs you just as much as you need them. Remember this. When        interviewed by either print or electronic media, be sincere, warm and enthusiastic.   You only have one chance to make a first impression. The best thing to do is to        create “sound bytes” on index cards. Simply write succinct, compelling, short       sentences about what it is about your business you want people to know.

Make friends with the media     Always address the media with graciousness and the highest level of courtesy. Never fail to send out thank you cards to reporters after your interviews. They will remember you for doing this, as most reporters rarely receive a note of thanks. Do this on traditional stationary, and never by email. You can even invite your reporter to  lunch to cultivate a professional relationship. They may contact you again for further  free publicity.

With these tactics in mind, you’re on you way to obtaining positive publicity…for free or on a shoestring budget.
