Pricing and Costs of Greeting Cards

Commit to a budget for business greeting cards for your organization

By Lori Carver
Pricing and costs of greeting cards fall into the category of advertising for businesses. Instead of pricey ads on radio, television or billboards, use greeting cards to connect to your customers on a personal level. Send them holiday or birthday greetings, or even use your own store events for an excuse to send a greeting card.

You can spend from under one dollar to several dollars on a greeting card, so consider making a budget for this expense. Buy greeting cards in bulk and save, but then you have to send the same card to everyone. Personalize your business cards for a bit more or buy card stock and a software program and make your own cards to send to your customers for less. Consider the following when looking at pricing and costs of greeting cards:

1. Buy corporate greeting cards from vendors in bulk.

2. Purchase designer greeting cards made to order.

3. Create your own cards by printing greeting cards with card stock for the lowest prices.

Obtain bulk prices for cards from greeting card companies

Many companies will offer a discounted price for buying in bulk, which is usually 100 cards at a time. Find out if you can get a few different designs for this price. If you must choose the exact same card, personalize it by adding a handwritten note inside the card and signing it yourself, instead of using a stamp.
Try: Execards offers holiday cards and gives 20% off all orders over $25. Their cards start as low as 79 cents each, so look at their selection. The Gallery Collection offers bulk greeting cards that sell for under $50 per box when you order two to nine boxes. Save even more when ordering 10 or more boxes. The contents vary, but most boxes contain 35 cards with envelopes.

Receive greeting card printing from online printing companies

Use online printing companies to print your personalized greeting cards. This will usually cost a bit more but your customer receives a custom card instead of a generic one.
Try: U Printing makes custom greeting cards starting at about $160 for 500 cards to under $600 for 5,000 cards. You can upload your own design or choose one of their ideas. Printing for Less will make your greeting cards for you, starting at under $250 for 250 cards. Send your design and payment and they will make a proof for your inspection in one business day.

Print greeting cards from your original designs to send to your customers

For the cost of card stock and a software program you can create outstanding cards for all occasions that will have your customers singing your praises. While the costs for this are low, you will have to invest time to make the cards or hire an employee to do it for you.
Try: Belltech Systems offers software for all types of greeting cards including birthday, holidays and special occasions starting at about $40.00. They offer a free trial of the software, so try before you buy to see if this works for your business. Avery offers greeting card stock for under $15 for 20 cards and envelopes. They also offer free templates for your cards and places to get free software to make your card, so be sure to look at those areas as well.

  • When sending custom greeting cards, make sure your budget can withstand the cost of this over the lifetime of your business. If you start a greeting card campaign, you will have to continue it year after year. In addition, if you send a very expensive card and then drop down to an inexpensive card the following year, your customers will have unkind words to say about you. So choose a card your budget can live with and a frequency you can maintain.
