Promotional Denim Shirts Key Terms

Learn denim shirts terms to choose the best product for your clients and staff

By Denise Brown
If you are thinking of purchasing promotional denim shirts for your staff or customers, you should familiarize yourself with promotional denim shirts key terms before you make your final decision. If you have a good understanding of the key terms in this guide, you are more likely to purchase promotional shirts made with longer lasting components. Fine detailing, such as double needle stitching, may cost more initially, but can help a garment last through many washings and wearings.

Embroidered

Embroidered denim shirts can reflect all the colors of your brand image. Created on an embroidery machine, these promotional items wash and wear well. There is usually a setup charge to create your embroidered logo.

Serged hem

Some shirts have a serged hem, which is mechanically finished with a serger sewing machine. There may or may not be raw edges of fabric on the lower hem exposed.
Try: Read more about serged hems at the Mississippi State University Extension Service.

Double needle stitching

Double needle stitching is done by two needles in a sewing machine that sew parallel lines. Double needle stitching provides helps ensure that seams don't rip open. You usually find double needle stitching around the armhole seam of promotional denim shirts.

Chambray

Chambray is a type of denim that is a lighter weight. Similar to cotton shirts, chambray is soft and comfortable to wear. Woven with white threads across a blue warp, most chambray fabric is light in color. However it is possible to find darker colors of chambray.
Try: You can see a sample of a chambray promotional shirt at Worldwide Products.

Stone washed

Stone washed denim fabric is soft and easy to wear. Stone washed fabric is, as the name implies, washed with stones or a chemical treatment to soften the fibers of the denim to make it feel broken in. Due to this process, stone washed fabric may not have a uniform color.

Pre-shrunk

Pre-shrunk denim promotional shirts are less likely to shrink after the consumer washes them than those that are not pre-shrunk. The garment manufacturer washes the fabric before making the shirt as part of the pre-shrinking process. Seams are less likely to pucker in pre-shrunk garments as well.
