Give your users access with a network remote access server

Remote access servers enable users to connect to your network remotely from home or other locations. Remote users can connect through broadband or dial-up connections, using a company-supplied laptop or computer or their own computer.

There are several methods you can use to set up remote access servers. The cheapest and easiest method is to set up an existing Windows server as a remote access server or virtual private network (VPN) remote access server. This may not be the safest method, however, especially if you have highly sensitive data on your network. Some of the ways you can get a remote access server and provide adequate security are:

1. Buy remote access server appliances.

2. Use a hosted VPN remote access server.

3. Set up VPN remote access on your firewall.

 

Purchase remote access server appliances

A remote access server appliance is a standalone device that integrates with your network to provide secure remote computer access. Buy remote access server appliances with advanced security and management features.

Use a hosted VPN remote access server

If you don't have the staff or budget to purchase and configure your own virtual private network remote access server, a hosted VPN remote access server might be the solution you need.

Install a firewall solution with remote VPN access server components

Purchase remote access server components as part of your firewall. A firewall isn't a true remote access server, but will provide the security that you need when you allow users to connect remotely. A firewall with ports for VPN connections can provide security by securely allowing a VPN client to connect to your network.

  • If your users will be using laptops, don't forget to secure them. They'll need a personal firewall, encryption software to protect your data if the laptop is lost or stolen and anti-virus and anti-malware software that gets updated regularly.
  • You can configure your Windows server as a remote access server through the server wizards. Remote access server specs include two network cards, one for inbound and one for local network connections.
