Tractor Attachments and Linkages Key Terms

Learning tractor attachments and linkages key terms can help simplify farming

By Denise Brown
Become familiar with tractor attachments and linkages key terms to get the most out of your tractor. For instance, there are many different attachments you can use on tractors. It’s also important that you know what kinds of linkage system your tractor has so you can get the right attachment for your tractor. Without the proper linkage system, your tractor may not be able to turn the gears that operate the attachment.

Three-point hitch

A three-point hitch connects implements to a tractor in such a way that the implements are easy to raise and lower. There is a top bar, called a pivot, which is adjustable and acts as a stabilizer. Two lower bars, or arms, have the task of raising and lowering the machinery.
Try: For a more detailed definition of a three-point hitch, read the information from Carnegie Mellon University.

Drawbar

A drawbar is a metal piece with holes bored into it. It connects with both of the lower lift arms of a three-point hitch. Its purpose is to allow the user to connect machinery to the bar for towing purposes.
Try: You can see some examples of drawbars from Northern Tool + Equipment.

Hydraulics

Pressurized oil in hoses allow a tractor's hydraulic system to operate. The hydraulic connectors raise and lower pieces of farm equipment.
Try: Yesterday’s Tractors has an explanation of how a tractor’s hydraulic system operates.

Power take-off

A power take-off, or PTO, consists of a long bar that connects the tractor with the equipment. The power take-off spins rapidly, using power from the tractor to automate the attachment. A PTO is very dangerous, so it's important to keep all shields in place around it.
Try: Read about the types of power take-offs at TractorData.com.

Weights

Weights, usually metal, placed on the front, tires or rear of a tractor give the tractor extra stability and pulling power. The weights are not permanent attachments, but the farmer usually leaves them on the tractor year round.
Try: While the information about tractor weights from Jim’s Repair/Jim’s Tractor pertains to smaller tractors, the theory of using weights to give the tractor ballast applies to all tractors.

Grousers or grouser bars

Grousers or grouser bars are attachments added to tracked equipment to give the crawler tractor more gripping power.
Try: Dura-Tuff Wear Products offers information about grouser bars on its website.
