Transistors are small semiconductor devices used to control the flow of electricity or to communicate digital signals in radio, computers, wireless and other communications. Most transistors are made with elements such as silicon and germanium. These semiconductor properties are combined with chemicals such as boron, arsenic or phosphorous to help the transistor with its voltage or power functions. Transistor voltage requires a battery component to safely transfer signal and electrical power to computers, calculators and portable transistor radios.

There are different categories for transistors, including the bipolar transistor, the power transistor and the field effect transistor. A bipolar transistor operates primarily through electrons and switches between circuits. It can also be used for high frequencies, and works well even through environmental changes. A power transistor, sometimes referred to as a power bipolar transistor, operates at lower frequencies and specific temperature ranges for devices used in commercial, industrial or automotive applications. The metal and oxide-based field effect transistor works in high-frequency applications such as computer networking systems.
