With advances in medical technology in the last century, donating blood has become a regular occurrence. However, it is still important that the general population continues to donate and that those who have not yet become involved learn how important it is. There are some people who do not understand the process, or fear the process, of donating blood.
When an individual agrees to donate blood, they can expect to have their blood drawn from a needle placed into one of their veins. The blood is expelled, painlessly, into blood bags which are then tested for any blood born disease which may cause harm to the recipient, such as hepatitis or HIV/AIDS. If the blood is pathogen-free, it is stored in a blood bank until such time as the life-saving qualities expire or it is transfused into a patient in need of blood. When an individual suffers serious blood loss, hospitals call upon the blood bank to supply blood bags of the correct blood type for the suffering patient.
Donating blood saves lives, and it is recommended when a family member, friend or loved one is a patient in a local hospital that we offer to donate blood for the on-hand supply for that facility.
