Prosthesis is an artificial replacement of missing body parts. It is also a device that can be used to enhance physical functions of the body, such as a hearing aid or glasses. There are many prosthetics available, and they all improve quality of life for those individuals requiring them.
Technology has advanced to the point where prosthetics emulate exactly the function of the original body part. Should an amputee need a new arm, it is easily available and will allow the wearer to pick up objects and move their fingers on command. Synthetic limbs work with the movement of muscles at the amputation site and allow the person to live almost the same way they did prior to their tragedy. External prosthetics require lifestyle adjustments, practice and a positive attitude.
Internal prosthetics also replicate the original organ. They are usually installed surgically and often require external daily management. Angelchik prosthesis, for example, will be placed around the oesophagus during a laparotomy. A prosthetic heart will also be surgically placed and will require frequent battery changes.
Prosthesis is wonderful and saves lives. However, they are costly and can be difficult to habituate to. Life for some without them is not an option.
