Surgical blades are specialized blades that are used for medical procedures, such as surgery and dissection. When purchasing surgical blades, consumers should consider the number of factors involved with blades, such as material, type, and purpose.  

Types of Blades

There are two main components of a surgical blade: the blade and the handle. While handles can be reused, blades are replaced after use. Surgical blades come in a number of shapes and sizes, and each blade is specialized for a particular function. Some of the blade shapes include narrow-shaped, chisel, and leaf-shaped blades. In addition, blades can be used for a number of cutting functions, such as general use, stripping, and long incisions. The size of the blade can also allow for precision cutting, or cutting though skin and muscle. However, the function of the blade depends on the shape and the size.

Tips for Choosing Surgical Blades

Type:
There are numerous types of blades available, all with different functions and cutting capabilities. When choosing a surgical blade, it is important to choose a blade that best suits your needs. Another important tip to consider is the numbering system of blades and handles, as blades will only fit with certain types of handles. In general, blades numbered through 10 and 15 will fit #3 handles, while blades though 20 and 24 will fit #4 handles.

Material:
Generally, most medical blades are made from tempered or carbon steel. However, consumers can choose to purchase blades of higher quality, such as blades made from diamond.  Alternative surgical blades are often used when steel blades are inapplicable in certain surgical processes, such as MRI surgery.

Safety:
Most blades are sterilized before commercial distribution though gamma radiation. However, to ensure the highest quality and safety, consumers should research different manufacturers and consider various options when purchasing surgical blades.
