Although a performance appraisal can set any employee on edge, the purpose isn't to uncover what an employee may be doing wrong, but is to assess the things that an employee does right and find ways to strengthen the positives. Performance appraisal consultants are often hired by corporations who don't have the time to conduct these appraisals internally, or prefer to receive unbiased feedback regarding employee performance.
Performance appraisal consultants use objective methods of evaluation that have been designed for a variety of professions and are optimally based upon measurable criteria, including the goals and objectives of the position. Once the evaluation is complete, it is in the interest of the company to apply the information as a starting point for additional training and development of the employee in an effort to generate peak performance.
Performance evaluations are typically conducted on an annual basis, although they can also be tied to the completion of specific projects. If you find that evaluations enhance the morale and productivity of your organization, apply them as frequently as necessary. Keep in mind, however, that no evaluation is foolproof, and whether they are conducted in-house or by performance appraisal consultants there is a human influence factor, and within this factor there is always a margin for error.
