While most forging is completed as hot work, with temperatures in the thousands of degrees, cold forging allows for working of the metal at much lower temperatures, sometimes as cool as room temperature. This technique is applied when making a finished product of less than 10 lbs., generally.

Open die forging can also be used to produce smaller pieces of only a few pounds, it also allows for the manufacture of pieces weighing hundreds of thousands of pounds and dozens of feet in length.
