Don't get bogged down in mud trying to figure out ATV parts key terms

If you own or operate an auto repair business or sell ATVs, chances are you have been asked repair or parts questions. In order to keep your customers happy, you should have a basic understanding of some ATV parts key terms to increase your overall ATV knowledge. The more you know about ATV parts, the better your service will be.
 

Two-stroke engine

An ATV two-stroke engine is a category of engine that uses a gas and oil mixture to run the pistons. Combustion occurs when the pistons pump two times. Similarly, in a four-stroke engine, combustion would occur when the pistons pump four times.

Hydraulic disc brake

The hydraulic disc brake is responsible for stopping the ATV. It operates by pushing fluid against the disc brakes to stop the wheels from moving.

Snorkel

A snorkel is a plastic tube that runs from the engine to the outside of the ATV. It lets the ATV ride in deep water without getting water sucked into the engine.

Knobbies

Knobbies refer to a type of tire used on ATVs. These tires have very large rubber knob treads. This type of tire is very effective on dirt or mud trails.

Skid plates protect the underside of the ATV from damage sustained by rocks and other impacts that can happen when riding on trails.
