Caustic soda is a strong base, a substance that can accept hydrogen ions, and is in widespread use in the chemical industry. It is used when there is a need to increase the alkalinity of a chemical mixture. It can also neutralise acids, such as carbon dioxide. Crude oil is sometimes treated with caustic soda to remove impurities. This is known as caustic washing, although, due to the toxic waste produced, it is banned in many countries.
