Clamps and Vises

Tips & Advice to help you make your decision on Clamps and Vises

Clamps and vises provide support for a variety of materials. Their primary function is to aid in the construction process, but clamps are also used to hold pieces of machinery and other constructions together indefinitely.

Primarily used in wood and metal work, vises come in a variety of styles. A traditional vise holds a piece of wood or metal tightly between two flat metal surfaces. By turning a handle, the worker can adjust the opening between the two surfaces so they grip the piece of wood or metal tightly.

A swivel-base vise is much like a traditional vise, but it features a swiveling base that allows the worker to easily move the piece from side to side.

A clamp vise combines the functions of both a clamp and a vise. Its design allows the worker to secure large pieces of wood directly to a work bench.

Although clamps serve the same function as vises, they are often used both during and after the construction process. During construction, vises often secure items while adhesives dry. After construction, clamps hold components together. For example, hose clamps are commonly used in plumbing to secure a flexible hose to another component.
