Hydrostatic Bearings

Tips & Advice to help you make your decision on Hydrostatic Bearings

Hydrostatic bearings are a type of bearing that uses a fluid or oil for lubrication. Hydrostatic bearings receive lubrication from an external pump. The pump keeps a static, or set, amount of lubrication pressure on the bearing. The lubrication pressure of hydrodynamic bearings is maintained by the rotation of the bearing in the journal.

Bearing can come in a variety of types. Jewel bearings may use garnet, ruby or sapphire. Polymer and plastic bearings are popular because they are lightweight and resistant to corrosion. They are considered to be maintenance free.

Bearings have three classes of lubrication. Class I bearings require lubrication from an external source. Class II bearing have lubricant inside but usually require maintenance and the periodic application of new lubricant. Class III bearings are actually created with a lubricating material and need no external lubrication.

Hydrostatic bearings tend to be used in heavy-duty operations. They can be found in connecting rods and camshafts in engines. These bearings tend to last longer than hydrodynamic bearings because lubrication is constantly available and not dependent on rotation speed. In bearing design, oil whirl must be taken into consideration. Groves may be cut into the bearing to reduce this problem.
