Industrial Fabrics

Tips & Advice to help you make your decision on Industrial Fabrics

Industrial fabrics, also known as textiles, are fabrics that are used for purposes other than as ordinary clothing. The types of fibers used in industrial fabrics are man-made, rather than natural. For example, natural fibers can be harvested from pants and animals, such as wool, cotton, linen, and silk. Man-made fibers result from an industrial process, such as the creation of microfiber from the polymerization of alcohol. These man-made processes are known as fiber chemistry, and they produce all types of synthetic materials, such as rayon, polyester, and nylon.

Synthetic fabrics have a wide application across many different aspects of life. Industrial fabrics are not used in ordinary clothing, but they are used in specialty gear, for instance to make flame-resistant uniforms for fire and military personnel. Other common applications include fabric for tents, canopies, and banners. The medical, marine, and construction industries regularly use industrial fabrics as part of their production processes.

The trade organization that represents makers of industrial fabrics is the Industrial Fabrics Association International. This organization protects and promotes the industry and supports new uses of synthetic materials. More importantly, the association educates the public about the importance of industrial fabrics, as synthetic fibers are key components in everything from aeronautics to conveyor belts.
