Choosing the right materials to use when manufacturing your product is a large part of the product design process. With traditional designs, steel is the only strong and durable material you can use. With the increasing presence of industrial laminates in the marketplace, a viable inexpensive plastics alternative is now available for your design use.

Industrial laminates are composite materials created from a variety of sources laminated together to create an easily machined, lightweight-but-durable alternative to steel. The base material is generally a plastic, such as resin or epoxy, combined with a secondary material like cotton fabric. These are then used to create sheets or blocks of laminate ready for forming.

For manufacturing, you can often substitute the laminate in place of a part or surface that would otherwise require the use of steel. Before you can make the substitution, you'll need to research the properties of the laminate that you're considering. For a water-resistant laminate that provides insulation, epoxy laminates are available. If you are looking for a biocompatible material, then a silicone laminate is of better use. There are even laminates you can use for products exposed to high levels of heat. These include phenolic resin laminates. Industrial laminates can serve a wide variety of manufacturing uses for low prices. For further information on the types available, follow the links on Business.com.
